We adopted an orphaned squirrel. Her name is Alexandra. We raised her from a baby with closed eyes until she showed us she was ready to stay out overnight. She was released into our backyard and lives in a tree where she alternates between her box that we installed and a squirrel made nest. She comes down the tree most days for a mid day snack and also up to the house for an occasional raid through our bedroom where we have a squirrel size pet door installed.
This squirrel has changed my view of nature and definitely taught me a few things about squirrels. For instance, they are way smarter than I thought. They are not lazy and are master builders with small branches, leaves, grass, wool if they can get it, and are among the world’s finest and fearless freestyle jumpers and climbers with amazing physical agility.
I should probably mention that her box in insulated with leaves, twigs, and raw wool.
